Hotel

("Black" edition)

This is the first "modern" version of Hotel.
The dimensions of the box have been fortunately reduced to about half of the 1974 edition, due to the fact that the table is now foldable in two. Everything has been totally redesigned and improved, even money, entrances (now they resamble real entrance of an hotel), dice (now region-free without any text) and cars (now the shape reminds a Porsche).
The rules are basically the same of the first edition, but since now Boomerang is much more powerful than before.
One of the biggest step forward was the design of the new buildings. It's very well done, now the single hotels have more "character", each of them has its own roof and dimensions, making everything more graphical appealing (which is its success against Monopoly).
I think this is the most successful and more known version of the game, it was translated in several European languages and has been reprinted with small improvements from 1986 to 1992 with always more languages. With a great worldwide promotion and tv commercials (see the Video section of this site), it gained a lot of fame between children and adults.
In the first release President was more powerful (7200 complete for six nights instead of $6600), in the others the title deeds are not coated and on the gameboard the first space doesn't give you anymore a free building phase, the arrows are grey instead of blue, the spaces where you can't put an entrance are evidenced in gray to avoid confusion.

Trivia: In Italy, BIM BUM BAM (a famous kids TV show at that time), included the game GIANT HOTEL. The whole set was built with the items of the boardgame Hotel, rebuilt to person size. It featured a short game played by kids with a simplified version of the rules.
